Tapas On and Off the Mat

The fire of devotion. One step at a time.

Tapas is one of those yoga Niyamas that can be intimidating.

Discipline. Effort. Heat. Commitment.

And yes, tapas is all of those things. Might sound harsh but it's not. I don’t think it is meant to become another way we pressure ourselves to do more, achieve faster, or become some perfected version of ourselves.

To me, tapas is much more human than that. It is the fire we keep tending.

On the yoga mat, we can understand tapas quite easily. It is the moment in a posture when things become uncomfortable, and instead of immediately giving up, we stay. We breathe. We observe. We notice what is happening in the body, but also what is happening in the mind.

The mind says:
I can’t.
This is too much.
I don’t like this.
I want to leave.

And sometimes, yes, we need to leave the pose. Sometimes the most honest and intelligent choice is to soften, adjust, or rest.

But sometimes we realize that we are not in danger. We are simply uncomfortable.

And that is where tapas begins.

It is the choice to commit and stay present. To remain connected to ourselves while something asks more of us.

That is powerful practice. And boy does it make us feel good.

Can we take that same fire into life?

It is easy to feel inspired after a beautiful class, a good book, a meaningful conversation, or a moment of clarity. We feel open. We feel awake. We feel like we know what needs to change. We're all in.

But then life continues.

The emails come in. People need things from us. The body is tired. The old pattern returns. The fear comes back. The motivation fades.

We've all felt the dread of having "that" conversation or upholding our boundaries. The relationships in which we could put more of our best efforts. The truths that we need to face within ourselves to change our habits and really makes strides towards our dreams and desires but feel like we're just not capable.

And this is where the tapas practice in life really begins. Committing when it's hard, when it doesn't come easily. Of not allowing yourself to get in the way of a better way to live. And to stick to it. Over and over again.

We do with with commitment yes. However, love and compassion are always leading the way. So it you feel overwhelmed, start softly:

  • A ten minutes of practice.

  • A walk.

  • An honest sentence.

  • A page written.

  • A nourishing meal.

  • A pause before reacting.

  • Speaking from the heart.

  • Deciding to begin again.

I think this is what makes tapas so beautiful. It reminds us that transformation is built through small acts of devotion. Those small acts coming together to build transformation.

There is something very freeing in this, because it means we do not need to wait for the perfect mood, the perfect timing, or the perfect version of ourselves. We can begin with what is here.

With this body.

This mind.

This day.

This one next step.

At Mesa Yoga, we think about practice in this way. We practice so that we can see ourselves more clearly. We practice so that we can meet life with more presence. We practice so that we can align what we believe, what we say, and what we do. We chose everyday.

Tapas helps us close the space between intention and action.

It asks:

What do you say matters to you?

And then, gently but firmly:

Are you willing to live in a way that supports that?

That question can be uncomfortable but it can also be incredibly loving.

Tapas is asking us to become more honest with ourselves. To stop abandoning what we know is important. To stop waiting for our life to magically arrange itself before we commit to our own growth.

The fire is already there.

Sometimes it is bright and easy to feel. Sometimes it is small, almost hidden. But even then, we can tend to it.

With one breath.

One choice.

One act of courage.

One promise kept.

Our devotion on and off the mat is the way we build a life that feels aligned from the inside.

Continue Exploring

This summer, we are continuing this reflection at Mesa Yoga, both in the studio and through our Mesa Notes on Instagram. Together, we are exploring the fire of commitment, the beauty of small steps, and the practices that help us move closer to what we seek. One devoted step at a time.
